Nutley High School
Rahway High School
The Nutley Raider wrestling team traveled to Rahway Monday evening and upset the #4 seed in the NJSIAA State Sectional quarterfinals by a score of 31-30. The Raiders came into the match on a recent hot streak where they have seen their record improve to 14-9 after starting the season both 0-5 and 1-7.
Rahway jumped out to an early 18-0 lead after 3 pins, but junior captain Frankie DeMaio started to shift momentum the other way with a first period pin that got the Nutley crowd and bench back into the match. That pin was the first of 7 straight wins that put Nutley in the drivers seat for the rest of the dual meet. Aaron Dunn, Joey DiPasquale, Frankie Gabrielle, CJ Haddock, Dan Jennings, and Justin Bivona were the Nutley grapplers that won 7 in a row. After some hard fought matches which saw Nutley wrestlers David Sanchez and Luis Abreu help the team by not giving up bonus points, sophomore Dominic Cofone stepped on the mat and sealed the victory for the Raiders.
Nutley will now travel to the #3 team in the state Cranford on Wednesday night in the state sectional semi-final which starts at 7 pm.
