The Nutley Girl’s Cross Country team kept an even record after week two of the SEC Duals. The Lady Raiders are now 2-2 on the season after defeating Columbia 22-37, and falling to MKA 26-31. Racing for the third time in six days in less than ideal weather, the Raiders tried to break up MKA’s lead pack of runners however came up just short. The heat and humidity did play a role in the times turned in by all runners. Junior Emily McIntyre quoted famous weatherman Ollie Williams at the post-meet press conference sponsored by the Turtle Back Zoo when she stated, “It’s hot.” All others would have agreed with McIntyre.
The day did get off a fast start for the Lady Raiders when rising freshman star Morgan DeFluri finished 3rd overall out of 73 runners in the 2 mile race. DeFluri continued to blister the paths of the short courses as she has done all year turning in a time of 15:02. In the varsity race the Raiders were led by Shawna Lewis who continues to run well after battling illness all of last year. Lewis clocked a 22:27 to lead the Raiders. Skylar Demikoff continued her impressive first year with a solid 23:56 for the #2 spot in the Raider lineup. Junior Kate Contini continued to be a top runner for the Raiders finishing 3rd for the the team in 24:00. Emily McIntyre clocked the #4 performance for the Raiders at 24:46, while Isabella Bernardo was in at 25:48. Jaela Small(26:27) and Taylor Waddleton(26:33) rounded out the top seven for the Raiders.
