Boys Varsity Cross Country, Girls Varsity Cross Country · Miruelo, Bernardo Race to All-County Status


Juniors Tiffany Miruelo(7th at 19:59) and Sean Bernardo(20th at 16:58) raced to lifetime best best times to secure All County Status at the 2019 Essex County Cross Country Championships held on the fairly quick paths of Brookdale Park.  Led by their junior top runners, the girls finished 6th overall with 167 points and a 21:29 team average, while the boys finished in 11th place with 296 points and a 18:23 team average. In the Freshman Girls race, the Raiders took the team title(22 points) led by Beth Christman’s PR 14:13.  In the JV Girls race, the Raiders were led by Kaitlin Mui’s PR 24:21 and finished in 5th place with 118 points.  The Boys JV team was led by sophomore Dan Harrington’s PR 21:12 and finished 10th asa team with 296 points.

The action got under way with the freshman 3200 meter race.  The Raiders saw Beth Christman place second by merely .7 seconds with a PR time of 14:13.  Adrianna Quinn(7th) was also a top ten finisher with her PR 15:26 clocking.  Megan Riccardi clocked a PR 16:35 for the 3rd spot in the Raider lineup. Stef Ugliarolo was 4th for the Raiders in 16:47, and Shayla Ismael, who overcome a breathing issue mid race, clocked a 17:05 PR. Kendra Hergenhan raced to a 18:31 PR for the 6th spot, while Lily Kremer was 7th for the Raiders at 19:19.  Reilley Granelli clocked a 20:42 for a PR.  The Raiders scored 22 team points and claimed the team title over Columbia who tallied 33 points.

The Varsity Girls race was next and the Raiders saw junior Tiffany Miruelo race to a big PR and even bigger barrier breaker, clocking her first ever sub 20 5K, with her 19:59 clocking.  Running second for the Raiders was junior Morgan Defluri who clocked a PR 21:38.  Gianna Marinaro crossed 3rd for the Raiders in a PR 21:48.  Freshman Erica Spina raced to a PR and cracked the 22 minute barrier with her 21:59.  Junior Ava Tucker ran a PR 22:03 for the 5th spot in the Raider lineup. Racing in the 6/7 spots for the Raiders were junior Maddy Seckler at 23:00 and Freshman Sarah Gibney at 23:06. The Girls raced to a 6th place team finish with 167 points and a 21:29 average, which was over a minute faster than they ran at the 2018 County Meet.

In the Boys Varsity race, Sean Bernardo cracked the 17 minute barrier for the first time ever and was able to grab All County Status crossing in 16:58 for 20th place. Senior Brian McCormack crossed in a PR 18:23 for the second spot.  Senior Nick Duca crossed next for the Raiders in 18:36.  Anish Kumar crossed next in what should have been a sub 19 clocking, however there was a mixup after the finish line involving the winds, he was given a 19:02.  Tyler Chang raced to a 19:17 PR, while Luca Vespa clocked a 19:42 and Jimmy Bernardo ran a 21:59 to round out the Raider lineup. The Boys just missed a top ten team finish tallying 296 team points.

In the Girls JV race, Kaitlin Mui raced to a PR 24:21 to lead the Raiders. Shannon Granelli clocked a PR 24:31, while Sophia Aivazis crossed in a PR 25:10.  Skylar Demikoff raced to a 25:35, Meghan Macaluso(25:51), Kayla D’Auria(25:58) and Nicole Kane(26:32) rounded out the top seven for the Raiders.  Abby Smith(26:54), Alexa Hergenhan(27:03), Alex Wasko(27:12), Kelly Waddleton(30:19), Elaine Dong(31:18) and Saska Schuemann(36:24) all raced to seasonal bests and lifetime bests. The Girls finished 5th as a team with 118 points.

In the Boys JV race, Dan Harrington led the Raiders with a 21:12.  Dante Fequiere ran a PR 21:52. Alvin Briones(22:19), Zihon Azama(25:36), Taylor Carnell(25:41) and Saumya Dwivedi(27:12) all raced to PRs. The Boys finished with 296 points in 10th place.

Next up for the Raiders is the first round of the NJSIAA State Championships on Saturday November 9 at Greystone Park.
