Game Recap

The boy’s soccer team played in the first round of the state tournament Tuesday afternoon. Nutley came into the tournament as the 14th seed and were taking on the 3rd seed Somerville. The game was going back and forth for the entire 80 minutes. With 10 minutes left to play Senior captain Matt Scorsone scored a header assisted by Senior Dan Caraballo. Somerville was able to quickly respond with a goal of their own, causing the game to go into over time. After two overtime periods, and no more goals, the two teams were headed for a penalty shootout. Austin Sweeney, JP Maruri, Matt Scorsone, and Garrett Groeling all scored from the penalty spot. Junior Brandon Syto made 6 saves in the game and 1 save in the penalty shootout to give Nutley the win. Nutley will now face the 11th seed Ferris on Friday in the Quarterfinals.

Game Recap

The Nutley Girls Soccer season came to an end yesterday with a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Middletown North.

Nutley ended the season with an 8-10-1 season which saw the Raiders drop six games by a score of 1-0 and another 2-1. Of Nutley’s 8 wins this season they defeated the Essex County Co-Champ MKA, as well as 6 other teams that won a state game yesterday.

Senior captain Lauren Holden’s fantastic career came to an end yesterday. Holden started every single game at sweeper over the last 4 years. She will continue her soccer career next fall at Marist College. Captain Maisie Jelley will also graduate having won 4 varsity letters as well. Natalie Muzzicato, Jillian DeSantis, and Maria Lopomo are the other 3 seniors whose career came to an end yesterday. We thank these seniors for all the hard work and commitment they have given to the Nutley Soccer program over the last 4 years and wish them the best of luck in the future.

Game Recap

The Nutley Raiders and Cranford Cougars battled to a 0-0 tie on Saturday. The game marked a very good warm up for the state tournament between 2 teams both in North Jersey Section 2 looking to make runs in the state playoffs.

The game which was played in the Nutley Park Oval on Tangorra Field also doubled as Senior Day. In a pre-game ceremony Captains Lauren Holden and Maisie Jelley, as well as , our 3 other seniors Natalie Muzzicato, Jillian DeSantis. and Maria Lopomo were all recognized for the time and effort they have put into Nutley Soccer for the last 4 years.

Nutley who is the 9 seed in the state tournament will travel to Middletown North High School on Monday afternoon at 4pm for a first round state game.

The Nutley High School Freshman football team lost to Par Hills on Saturday. John VanDeventer scored the first touchdown for the Raiders with a one yard rush, the 2pt Pass failed. Johnny Coppola scored the other touchdown for the Raiders with a 14 yard run and Gennaro Longobardi ran in for the 2pt conversion. Nutley (5-3) will travel to Westwood High School on Saturday to play at 9am.

Game Recap

The boy’s soccer team took on Cranford High School Saturday morning. The Raiders took a controlling lead in the first half, going into halftime with a score of 2-0. During the second half, Cranford fought back and scored a goal of their own. Nutley was able to secure the game with a third goal and great defense, to end the game 3-1. Junior Garrett Groeling was able to score his 8th and 9th goals of the season. He is the leading goal scorer for the Raiders. Junior Jose Ferriera scored as well in the win for Nutley. Jose Ferriera, Dan Caraballo, and JP Maruri all had an assist for the Raiders. Brandon Syto captured 8 saves for the Raiders, and Christian Torres made 2. This was the final regular season game for Nutley, and they enter the state tournament as the 14th seed, where they will face Somerville on Tuesday.

Game Recap

The Raiders played their last home game on Friday against River Dell high school. Nutley was able to score first, by a goal from Senior Kenny Neri. River Dell was able to answer back, and even up the score 1-1 right before halftime. The second half was dominated by the Raiders though. Garrett Groeling, Austin Sweeney, and Josue Maldonado all scored a goal to secure a 4-1 win. Nick Kirby, Ilya Udalov, and Jose Ferreira each had an assist for the Raiders. Brandon Syto made three saves in the game.
